Naturopathic Medicine
Dr Maura Scanlan of Kirkland Natural Health and Dr Michael Woo are both Washington State Licensed Naturopathic Physicians. Naturopathic Physicians conduct a thorough health history and exam to customize a health plan based on your individual requirements. Listed below are some services available at our clinic. The origin of naturopathic medicine is based on the principles of nature cure and uses the healing power of nature from healthy diet, water (hydrotherapy), sleep, exercise and plant and mineral based medicines. These tools provide the building blocks to stimulate the vital force / qi/ healing energy in the body with least invasive treatments used first. As naturopaths we draw from all medicines available and when necessary utilize, radiographic imaging, pharmaceuticals and surgery. We will work in conjunction with your medical doctor and form a health team to co-manage your health condition.
Acupuncture
Using Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) - based on the concept of energy called Qi which circulates in the body through meridians. Meridians act as highways to carry the energy through out the body. Acupuncture needles are inserted into points along the meridians to stimulate the Qi of the body. Each point has a predictable effect on the Qi that is moving through it. The points chosen by the practitioner are based on symptom picture as well as pulse and tongue diagnosis
Injections
intramuscular injection of B12 may help with fatigue, and certain anemias.
Electrical stimulation
Interferential, Muscle Stim, TENS and/or Micro current - electrical stimulation of the muscles helps to restore and maintain muscle nutrition. This can promote blood flow to the tissue which helps cellular exchange of nutrients and removes cellular waste products, decreases pain and swelling, promotes healing, strengthens healthy muscles and connective tissue and improves mobility or range of motion of the muscle and joint. This can be done in conjunction with acupuncture to enhance the effectiveness of each modality.
Gynecological Exams
a Naturopathic doctor can perform your annual women’s health exam including pap and breast exam. These preventative screening exams can aid in the early detection of cervical and breast cancer.
Hydrocollator packs and heat lamps
Local application of moist or dry heat to increase blood flow to muscles and joints. This will decrease muscle tension and spasms which also reduces inflammation and pain. The end result increases range of motion and muscle function and promotes relaxation.
Neuromuscular Re-education
A series of alternating muscle stretching and contractions which lengthens muscles, increases range of motion and decreases pain. Helpful in the treatment of pain; neck, back , and headaches are a few conditions this technique treats.
Nasosympatico Treatments
This is a sinus drainage treatment to alleviate sinus congestion, infections and allergies. Swabs soaked in antimicrobial aromatic oils are inserted into the nose; this procedure soothes the mucus membranes and promotes sinus drainage.
Short Wave Diathermy
application of electromagnetic waves that transforms into deep heat to the lungs. This can help in the treatment of respiratory conditions such as bronchitis, pneumonia, chest congestion and asthma. SWD does this by deceasing mucus/phlegm viscosity and bronchial spasms, dilating the bronchioles to allow greater air passage and increases the local flow of blood and nutrients
Ultrasound
using high frequency sound waves to generate heat and vibration to ease pain and inflammation in a joint or muscle. This can also prevent scar tissue from forming after an injury as well as breaking down adhesions from previous chronic injuries.
